My passion and life-calling are in helping to advance physician and care team well-being and physician and healthcare leader effectiveness. I accomplish this through coaching, consulting, writing, speaking, teaching, and workshop facilitation. And now through PeerRx.

Zilience! That’s my word for when I’m my optimal physical, emotional, cognitive, spiritual, and relational self. It’s a word I created to represent what exists “beyond resilience” and that I believe we should all should strive for. And it’s not only possible, but essential for each of us to spend as much of our professional (and personal) lives as we can in that space. How do I know it’s possible? Because I’m striving to live it out every day, and even when I don’t “succeed,” the intention that I set and actions that I take based on my “zilience vision” move me closer than otherwise would have happened. And connecting regularly and meaningfully with others is an essential ingredient in that process!

“By day,” I serve as Professor and Vice Chair of Family Medicine and Community Medicine at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTC) and as the Vice Chair for Academic Affairs and Professional Development for the Carilion Clinic Department of Family and Community Medicine. I also serve as the Medical Director for the Carilion Clinic Institute for Leadership Effectiveness (ILE) and Chair the Carilion Clinic/VTC Faculty Vitality and Professional Well-Being Committee.

It is a privilege as well to serve as the Director and for the past 20 years as faculty for the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Chief Resident Leadership Development Program, a program which helps to develop over 300 emerging physician leaders each year and more than 5,000 since its inception. Additionally, serving as the conference Chair for the annual AAFP Physician Health and Well-Being Conference since 2018 has allowed me to meet and work with Kindred Spirits from all over the country. To learn more about this work hear my interview on an American Family Physician podcast bonus episode.
